I remember when the stars were like pinholes in a vast, dark tarpaulin hung from the sky.
As though the night was turned inside-out and the distant lights of space shone in,
Like sun through a hanging sieve.
Trees blotted the heavens and revealed a canvas of true beauty as we cast our eyes up
Into the unknown.
A cool breeze washed over us, like cresting waves beneath a bright, full moon
And we wished for harmony,
We hoped for togetherness,
And we prayed for a future that is kind to us all.
Although we lie beneath different skies and breathe the air of our own lands,
We are united – bound by humanity
To care,
To love.
And from that felled tree in the woods, we took in the vista offered to us
And looked forward with hope and with will that together,
Our brothers and sisters from all corners of the world
Can stand and cast off the shackles of oppression that bind so many of those that we love.
To listen is to love and to learn is to truly progress.
We hold our heads above water not just to survive, but to breathe deeply
And stand undivided.
